And here is April (I’m aware it’s been here a while, I’m just catching up post-holiday) the month of inclement weather and inclement feelings towards the activity of selecting and pulling on an outfit each day.
April is the trickiest month, in my opinion. At least for us UK-dwellers. It’s not warm, it’s not freezing. It’s wet, there’s still a bone-chilling-dampness in the air at times BUT you’re bored of being practical and sensible with your choices. (Or I am, at least.) I’m bored with the lot of it and ready to jump ship and decamp to somewhere fairer until June.
Spoiler alert- there’s no promise of sunshine then, either… and so, my advice to you this April will be- prioritise what you dream of wearing, what you’ve been longing to wear since January, and then add in a dose of practical at the last minute. So basically, turn your winter logic (practicality first, but make it cute) on its head entirely and make dressing the way you’re dreaming of dressing, somehow bearable. (I do believe that here in the UK there’s an element of grin-and-bear-it-even-if-the-weather-is-shite the whole year round.)
When I say “the clothing I’ve been dreaming of wearing” here’s what I mean…
It comes down to priorities- I am happy to admit that by April my frivolous desire to wear something flimsy with bear legs is starting to eat a hole in my practical-and-sensible defences.
I start with the above moodboard and then move onto flicking through what I was wearing this time last year… It’s like muscle memory that needs waking up- I’ve forgotten how to dress for anything other than winter. I’ve forgotten that when I bare an ankle and get my toes painted, it makes me smile.
Here are some of my fave looks from last Spring.
